Step-by-step guide: how to install a trading bot in MetaTrader 4

Step-by-step guide

Automated trading is becoming increasingly popular among traders who want to save time and let a program execute their strategies. In MetaTrader 4 (MT4) , these programs are called Expert Advisors (EAs) or simply trading bots .

If this is your first time, don't worry: here's a step-by-step guide to installing a bot on MT4 and getting started in just a few minutes.

You can also download the complete guide with images for free, or watch the video on our YouTube channel.

Step 1: Download the trading bot (EA)

First of all, you need the bot file.

  • Typically, MT4 trading bots come in .ex4 or .mq4 format.

  • Once you purchase or download it, save it to your computer.

In our trading bots store , each download includes detailed instructions along with the file.

Step 2: Open the MT4 installation folder

  1. Open MetaTrader 4 .

  2. In the top menu, click File → Open Data Folder .

  3. A window will open with several folders.

This is where you'll place your bot.

Step 3: Copy the bot file to the correct folder

  1. Inside the data folder, open MQL4 → Experts .

  2. Copy your bot file (.ex4) into that folder.

Close the window.

Step 4: Restart MetaTrader 4

For MT4 to recognize the new bot, you need to restart the platform.

  • Close and reopen MetaTrader 4.

  • In the left panel, under Expert Advisors , your bot should appear.

Step 5: Configure the bot on a chart

  1. Open the chart of the pair or instrument you want to trade (example: XAU/USD, EUR/USD ).

  2. Drag your bot from the Expert Advisors panel to the chart.

  3. A window will open with the configuration options.

Here you can customize:

  • Batch size.

  • Stop loss and take profit.

  • Risk management.

Step 6: Activate the trading bot

  1. Make sure the AutoTrading button at the top of MT4 is green.

  2. If the bot is working, you'll see a smiley face in the top right corner of the graph.

If you see a sad face, it means the bot is not active (make sure you have enabled “Allow auto trading” in the settings).

Additional tips

Test on demo first: Before using the bot on a live account, test it on a demo account to make sure it works as you expect.
Review settings: Each bot has different parameters, so check the settings carefully before operating.
Keep MT4 open: Bots work as long as the platform is open and connected to the internet. → You can see the guide on what it is and how to get a VPS to avoid this.

Conclusion

Installing a trading bot in MT4 is a simple process that any trader can complete in just a few minutes. Once configured, your Forex EA will automatically open and close trades, following your defined strategy.
